Network TV Takes a Back Seat
It’s funny how you never know what you are missing if it does not yet exist. Growing up in the 1960’s and 1970’s we had about five or six television channels to choose from. Beyond a couple of independent UHF stations and PBS, we were pretty much dependant on the big three networks for out television entertainment. That thought gives me the shivers today. I’ve got hundreds of channels to choose from on my DISH Network satellite service and I rarely find myself watching the programming that is offered by ABC, NBC or CBS.
I’ll concede that there are some good programs on network TV, and I watch three or four of them on a regular basis, but that’s about it. It’s also a big change from the old days when we watched those three networks about 95 percent of the time! I’m a huge fan of channels like Discovery and The History Channel. I can sit down in front of my TV at almost any hour of the day and find something that’s worth watching. These channels have managed to make educational programming interesting and fun.
I honestly cannot say whether or not these types of channels would have been of interest to me as a kid, but it would have been nice to find out. I suppose PBS had some good educational offerings at the time, but I rarely watched them. I can remember watching episodes of Nova on PBS but that’s the only thing that stands out in my mind.
I’m very glad to have the programming choices that are available us today. Relying on the likes of ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX for all of my television entertainment would be like returning to the dark ages.
